Pastor Gretchen’s Monthly Message
“Your Will Be Done” Does Our Language & Practice Follow
We talk a lot about discernment in the church. We talk a lot about doing God’s will and following God’s lead. Every utterance of the frequently said Lord’s Prayer asks for this: “Your will be done.” But do our church practice and our language actually follow our prayer? The prayer presumes a life active in discerning God’s will, but have we as leaders taught discernment and lived it out as congregations? The monthly meeting of the Church Council begins. Or a TEAM. Or a congregational meeting. We bow our heads and together invoke God’s presence, wisdom and guidance. The “Amen” said by all signals the end of the spiritual part and the beginning of business, pretty much done like business anywhere: receiving information, weighing decisions, and asking all around “what do you think?” In the end, votes are taken based upon our best thinking, individual preference and Roberts Rules of Order, which informs us that “the majority rules.” But our theology says that God rules. And the promise is that there is more available to us than personal preference or our best thinking. Yet after the opening Amen, was that actually sought during the meeting? Was the question ever asked, “Where do you sense God is leading?” or “What do you hear the Spirit saying?” What if our business meetings and our language actually followed our prayer in intentional ways? Surely asking “what do you hear the Spirit saying” is a far different question than “what do you think.” By the Rev. Thomas L. Weitzel “Where do we sense God is leading”? We have been talking a lot about prayer,
Pastor Gretchen’s Monthly Message faith and discernment these past weeks. We trust God’s will be done. We believe that God rules. We believe in God’s promises. These truths move us to humbly respond to the question, “What do we hear the Spirit saying?” It is my belief that the Spirit is saying persevere in the journey of faith. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Live lives of discernment and truth and the way will be revealed. For today, in the life and ministry of Redeemer we are listening for the Spirit calling us to deeper faith and truth through the Gospel and service. God’s will is indeed being done as we practice our faith in prayer and supplication.
Dear Family in Christ,
In Christ’s Boundless Joy, Pastor Gretchen
A fun day has been planned to kick off Sunday school. Rally day will be September 12, 2010 at 8:45 am. A potluck lunch will follow the Sunday service and all are welcome to attend. Everyone is asked to bring a dish that corresponds to the first initial of their last name: A-I—SALADS J-R—DESSERTS S-Z—VEGETABLE DISH Hope to see everyone!
I am usually kind of sad as summer ends and the days start getting shorter but with the heat this summer, I am ready to watch the leaves turn and even start raking! Just some updates from our recent Council meeting this month. To save some costs, time and to be more “green”, the Council meeting minutes will not be printed in the newsletter each month. This will save a considerable amount of paper but they will be available to anyone who wants them. The Financial Report will also be in a more concise and easier to read form in the newsletter but the full accounting forms will also be available. We will have a supply of them in the Narthex. If we run out we will gladly print more. The TEAM reports in the newsletter should inform you of all of their activities. Other information from the Council meeting will be included in separate announcements as needed. We understand that this is a change but we think it will be a good change. Let us know your thoughts after this month. Before I close I do need to ask everyone to think and pray about your giving. We are not making budget with our weekly offering. Everyone is doing a great job at watching our bills – almost every category is under budget. But we are needing more monies to pay our bills. If you miss church (that happens esp. in the summer!) please try to make it up the next week if you can. Thank you for your help and support in this. As always, I thank all of you for all you do for Redeemer and for the glory of God. May you all have a blessed, and cooler, September! Peace, Nancy Otte Council President
Mission Statement Providing for the needs of those inside and outside our church walls.
The RCW will meet on Tuesday, September 7th at 6:30 pm. Angie Schnarr will serve as hostess and Pastor Gretchen will be the Bible study leader.
The Social Ministry TEAM along with will start collecting “Box Tops for Education” in addition to Campbell’s Soup labels for the Navajo Indian Reservation. These are found on General Mills products, Betty Crocker, Hefty Scott paper products, Green Giant, Highlighter, Avery Office products and many others. What an easy way to help this group! Please put them in the basket in the narthex marked “Box Tops for Education”. (A complete list may be found in the basket.)
All women are welcome to attend.
Thanks to everyone who helped purchase the items needed to make the school kits for Lutheran World Relief. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Are you working on projects for the Bazaar? It will be here before we know it! We continue to collect Campbell’s Soup labels for the Navajo Indian Reservation. The Holiday Bazaar has been scheduled for Saturday, November 20th. Baked items, canned fruits and vegetables, homemade noodles, cookies, pies, and cakes are always a winner! Any kind of craft items are always welcome. We will also have a White Elephant sale. The White Elephant items sell really well. No clothing please. The proceeds will be used to replace the flooring in the fellowship area and kitchen.
Amazon.com Review
Who among us has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? C. S. Lewis dispels all doubts. In The Screwtape Letters, one of his bestselling works, we are made privy to the instructional correspondence between a senior demon, Screwtape, and his wannabe diabolical nephew Wormwood. As mentor, Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the finer points, tempting his “patient” away from God. Each Letter is a masterpiece of reverse theology, giving the reader an inside look at the thinking and means of temptation. Tempters, according to Lewis, have two motives: the first is fear of punishment, the second a hunger to consume or dominate other beings. On the other hand, the goal of the Creator is to woo us unto himself or to transform us through his love from “tools” into servants and servants into sons.” It is the dichotomy between being consumed and subsumed completely into another’s identity or being liberated to be utterly ourselves that Lewis explores with his razor-sharp insight and wit.
Review From Library Journal
Book Description
In this humorous and perceptive exchange between two devils, C.S. Lewis delves into moral questions about good vs. evil, temptation, repentance and grace. Through this wonderful tale, the reader emerges with a better understanding of what it means to live a faithful life. His letters are signed, save one, “your affectionate uncle”, yet Uncle Screwtape’s purpose in writing to his young nephew are hardly innocent. Penned in a brisk, businesslike style, old Screwtape offers the gullible Tempter Wormwood fiendishly clever advice on his most pressing concern: the winning of young lives to the devil.
From the back cover
Lewis’s satire is a Christian classic. Screwtape is a veteran demon in the service of “Our Father Below” whose letters to his nephew and protégé, Wormwood, instruct the demon-in-training in the fine points of leading a new Christian astray. Lewis’s take on human nature is as on-target as it was when the letters were first published in 1941. .
