Pastor Gretchen’s Monthly Message
What have you heard? On September 1, a workshop entitled “AMP Up Your Marketing” was held at RLC. We were to list two or three ideas that come to mind for use in our congregation as we discussed the three elements of marketing: Audience, Message, and Plan. Audience 1. How do people perceive us? The way people see us is the reality of who we are on a given day. 2. Who is our target audience? Who is in the pews-families, singles, widowed, divorced, young, seasoned, members, visitors? 3. How do we welcome those who come through our church doors? Message What is our message? How do we convey our message to the audience? 2. What is most important for our ministry? 3. Is our message timeless? 1. Plan
clarifying our identity through God’s call. Without our identity stemming from Christ we will not prosper. Ministry derives from God’s call and our faithfulness to it. I encourage all to get close to God and stay there. ‘Return to the Lord.” Consider the church in the book of Acts. At every stage of development, the spirit’s guidance was not only requested through prayer, it was actively sought in practice. In Acts 1, when it was time to fulfill the vacancy left by Judas among the twelve apostles, the disciples all prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry…” (Acts 1:25-26). It was a prayer of discernment. It is my prayer for us in the life of RLC that we ask the often difficult question of who God will have us to be, for today. Discernment is a spiritual practice which must be performed daily to reap the benefits. May we faithfully practice. In Christ’s Service
1. Communication is only….everything
2. What investment will each member need to contribute to fulfill the marketing plan? 3. How will we measure success? These are a few of the points of interest throughout our conversation. RLC is in a time of discernment. We are Pastor Gretchen
If you're spiritually alive, you're going to love this! If you're spiritually dead, you won't want to read it. If you're spiritually curious, there is still hope! Why Go To Church? A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing...... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment! All right, now that you're done reading, send it on! I think everyone should read this! "When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say, "Jesus, could you get that for me?" Shared by Carol Keller

Getting Down to Basics: The Augsburg Confession and Small Catechism
For Lutherans, The Book of Concord provides the definitive collection of their confessions of faith, including the allimportant Augsburg Confession and Small and Large Catechisms. This ten-unit course has three 15-30 minute sessions each. It provides an overview of the historical development of all the documents in the Book of Concord, as well as in-depth looks at their theology, focusing particularly on the Augsburg Confession and Luther’s Catechisms. Learners will discover the basic doctrinal commitments of the Lutheran Confessions and how they may apply in contemporary parish settings. This course provides a lively, down–to-earth examination of central Lutheran teachings as justification by grace through faith on account of Christ, the distinction between law and gospel, the theology of the cross, the church and public ministry, the sacraments, and Christian callings in daily life. Students will gain new insight into the basics of Lutheran teaching and how it can strengthen their faith and witness today. Students will become thoroughly familiar with the two texts, understand the historical context out of which they speak, and discover new ways to apply these teaching to life in today’s parish. Presented by Dr. Timothy Wengert, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.

Greetings from South Carolina! Pastor Gretchen asked me to a write a monthly update about my adventures in seminary so I am going to give it a shot (with God's help of course). I am settling into seminary and the surrounding community very well. The community is very welcoming here and I have truly felt at home since arriving here. Experiences have been slightly overwhelming at times such as the first time I sat in the classroom and had to identify Greek alphabet for the first time. However I am reminded of God's presence in my life and call to Word and Sacrament. For a class, I was asked to identify my "favorite" Bible verse and how that factors into how we (my class and I) deal with change. As I sat down to think about this assignment, I kept coming back to Isaiah 43:1-4. It is hard for me to identify just a favorite one but this is one that speaks to me on several levels. Verse one talks about how "....I have called you by name." This can apply to anyone. We are all called to be part of the body of Christ in which we all as disciples of Christ. We are to use are gifts and talents to the best of our abilities and not ignore that call. I am humbled to think of the mission that me and my fellow seminary students are embarking on. Verse two states"....you will pass though the fire and not be burned." and verse four...."You are precious in my sight and.....I love you." So whatever life seems to throw our way we are protected because God sees us through all and loves us. So for this particular moment, my life is full of history of the church, learning about the Lutheran traditions, Greek, Greek and more Greek .Hope all is well at Redeemer. Thank you so much for your prayers of support. If you would like to contact by mail, my address is Christina Mauntel 4201 Main St, 250 Columbia, SC 29203 Peace in His Name,
Christina

Strengthening Worship Workshop Report Pastor Gretchen and Angie Schnarr attended a workshop offered by Centers for Congregations on August 10th. The speaker was Greg Graham of Blue Grass United Methodist Church. He has more 20 years of music and worship leadership. He shared advice on recruiting and leading the worship team for a contemporary or blended service. He started the program by himself and it has grown into two praise teams. He stated that your music and worship team have to have a mission statement. What is the purpose of the music ministry? He stated that is where you need to start and once you have that in place then you can ask does what we want to do fulfill our mission. He said that rules and expectations should be in writing so that there are no questions about what is expected. You have to have talented musicians who are willing to practice and are committed. He stated if you have a good program people will want to be involved. He was a very interesting speaker and very knowable about music and worship team leadership.
Marketing 101 On Wed Sept 01, Marketing 101 was presented in Redeemer’s Fellowship hall by joint effort of the Center for Congregations and the Indiana Nonprofit Resource Network. Pastor Gretchen, Amy Gonnerman and Larry Lorey attended along with various Lutheran and other Denomination Churches of the area. We learned in this seminar that to help grow our congregation from within the community we need to market Redeemer Lutheran. The seminar was titled "AMP Up Your Marketing." We must determine who we are targeting as prospective members (Audience), what our “sales pitch” is (Message), and then the steps, actions, and methods of presenting the message to the community and prospective members (Plan). We need to form a marketing TEAM to work closely with Redeemer's other TEAMS to present our pitch. Are you a person interested in helping the community learn who and what Redeemer Lutheran is? If so, please contact Pastor Gretchen.

The Holiday Bazaar is planned for November 20th from 9am-2pm. The bazaar has helped us to make improvements to the fellowship and kitchen area. The most recent project was new lighting in the fellowship hall and kitchen. The new lights in the fellowship hall have made a big difference. The next project will be to get new floor covering. The old tile will have to be removed by professionals who deal with asbestos and then there are some leveling issues before new flooring can be put down. We are in the process of getting some estimates. In the past we have had homemade noodles, homemade breads, cakes, pies, candies, cookies, snacks, and any other baked goods that you can think of, jams, jellies, canned vegetables, fruits, turnip slaw, pickles and relishes and frozen dressing. We have even had homegrown turnips. These items have sold very well. We have some very talented members. Some of the items that will be at the bazaar this year are woven placements, table runners and rugs. We will have crocheted scarves, dish cloths and hand towels. We will again have a “White Elephant” sale. This has always been a very successful part of the bazaar. Some of the items we’ve had in the past are books, magazines, all kinds of gently used household items, Christmas decorations and stuffed animals. (We do not accept any clothing items). You can start bringing in donations on Monday, November 14th. Please help make the Bazaar a success again this year.
The RCW will meet on Tuesday, Oct.5th at 6:30 pm. Louise Weisheit will lead the Bible Study (copies of the study is on the round table in the narthex) and Carol Witte will serve as hostess.
